Four gain stages in the STUDIO 2U-PREAMP provides enough saturation for the heaviest sounds, or the most delicate layers of tube tone to create scintillating clean sounds. Each veil of character can bring nuance to the sound or bring entirely new hammer blows of ripping crunch. It is all in how you set the controls.
Each preamp stage of the STUDIO 2U-PREAMP has its own FOCUS control. This boosts the gain in a specific frequency range. The HIGH and LOW controls provide equalization after the stage, providing subtle shadings or distinct bass, middle or treble emphasis or roll-off. The DRIVE control on the first three stages determines how much signal goes from this stage to the next, allowing total control over how clean or dirty the sound is, and where any grit is added. The LEVEL control on the fourth stage is like a master volume.
Any of the four EQs can be the dominant EQ for the sound, with the others set for subtle voicing. This arrangement allows any standard preamp architecture to be dialed up: 1+3, 2+2, 3+1, 4+0, or new configurations with double, triple or quadruple EQs. In this nomenclature, the "+" indicates the position of the EQ with gain stages before it and after it. For example, a Fender preamp is a 1+1, with gain>EQ>gain.
