Past Products

LONDON POWER produces revolutionary guitar amps using trend-setting technology. From time to time we update our line of amplifier products (see current products), but many musicians, hobbyists and fans are still interested in information on past "historic" models. Some of these models reappear in Kevin O'Connor's books as designs for do-it-yourselfers. No London Power tube amp ever dies!

The descriptions below are from our 2003 series of offerings.

SPECTRUM
0-50W
power scaling bass amp

Note: photo depicts rack-style SPECTRUM

The SPECTRUM bass amp offers a full range of tones from vintage to modern, with room to create tones never heard before. It's heart is a highly dynamic preamp that accommodates active or passive instruments with equal ease. Plug in your electric, or your stand-up with a raw piezo pickup and hear the full glory of your instrument and yourself!

Like our other amps, the SPECTRUM accepts any of the standard-pin-out octal-base power tubes in any combination. This opens up unheard-of tonal range for a bass amp. Power Scaling lets you tap into amp compression at any loudness down to a whisper. SUSTAIN gives the feel of a vintage amp with a tube rectifier while BODY dives into warm single-ended tones that were never a part of bass history are a part of their future. SPECTRUM will drive any cabinet impedance or combination using the direct-impedance jacks on the rear panel. Match them to the load for maximum power or plug in anywhere that sounds good. Our massive output transformer just delivers great tone anyway you load it so feel free to experiment.

Players we have talked to do not often need more power than 50W. Besides, 50W of real tube power is as loud as 100s of Watts of solid-state power when it comes to fat compression that sings. If you really need more power, add a SUPER SCALER or two and drive as many cabinets as you like.

Pristine clean. Warm vintage roundness. Spanky power. Raunchy grind. Have the full SPECTRUM!

SESSION

integrated
0-50W guitar amp

The SESSION just might be the best jazz amp on the planet!

So you just want to play in a band? One room needs a lot of power, so you bring your big amp with two 12"s. The next place needs something really quiet, so you bring your little amp with a single 12". Then you play another room with your medium-powered 4x10" amp. Every room sounds different, and each time you must contend with different speaker complements, different amp tones, different levels of satisfaction and inspiration.

Power Scaling and other goodies

The SESSION amp will put an end to "difference" forever! It's the working musician's dream. Dial up only as much power as you need. Like all of the new line of LONDON POWER instrument amps, Power Scaling is the secret to having the same tone and touch responsiveness at all power levels. Set the POWER SCALE to MAX and have 50W of glorious guitar tone - classic, sweet and clean. Overdrive it and live on the edge - or beyond. Dial the POWER SCALE down and you can achieve this same magic at lower SPLs. It helps if your speaker is up to the task! On stage, use the SESSION 112 cabinet, or experience the full London Power tone with a pair of separated cabinets! This allows you to keep up with drums, even at low Power Scale settings.

We added the LIMIT control to literally limit the amount of output tube distortion that can occur as you dial down the power down. LIMIT assures the proper interface between the output stage and the rest of the amp. Of course, you can use the LIMIT control independently as a master volume to create some fat distortion tones from the preamp. For an "automatic" limiting function, flick the tracking T switch. This Power Scales additional circuitry and keeps the tone more consistent with "single-dial Power Scaling".

Of course, you don't have to use the Power Scale to get output tube distortion. You can decide how loud you wish to play with everything set for maximum clean loudness, then dial down the POWER SCALE control. Stop when you hear distortion, and then nudge it up a bit. Now you are playing at the amp's compression point, which can really add to the singing quality of your guitar.

The magic of Sustain

There's another way to tap into that compression, using the SUSTAIN control. This gives a variable supply impedance - sometimes called "sag", but that is so demeaning - which is inherently a signal-dependent phenomenon. Here's what happens: When a power supply is loaded down, its output voltage drops. In an amp, it is the audio power stage that loads the supply down, which it only does when you drive the amp harder. You would suppose that a Power Scaled amp would exhibit no sag at all, but this is not the case. Even without the SUSTAIN control, our Power Scale circuitry is designed to provide a soft rectification effect similar to a tube rectifier. It also filters out diode rectification noise, so most amps sound better dialled down than at full power. The SUSTAIN circuit provides further softening of the supply but in an infinitely variable way that the player determines.

"What if I leave POWER SCALE at MAX and just dial up the SUSTAIN?"

You will get an increasingly spongy sound. At the extreme it may not be useful, or be merely so as a novelty sound. But using it more conservatively, it will change the "feel" of the amp. Especially when combined with Power Scaling, SUSTAIN will let you hold notes forever and roll them easily into feedback. Hey, that sounds like my kind of jazz! Since music is all about... you know... you should know that more women prefer 'sustain' to 'sag'. Who wouldn't?

EQ & Drive

The all-tube SESSION uses a pair of 12AX7s in a three-stage preamp architecture that produces a magnificent, sweet clean tone for electric or acoustic. The DRIVE control can dial up rich "throaty" tones perfect for jazz, blues or rock. The 3-way EQ offers HIGH, MID and LOW controls that offer a familiar feel. This is the same circuitry as the clean channel of the SUSTAINOR preamp. Yes, it actually increases the sustain of your guitar sound!

The smart loop

The parallel - or "mixing" - effects loop is switchable to series mode using the front-panel S switch. The effects loop has variable SEND and RETURN controls right on the front panel where you can access them quickly during a gig. The loop accommodates both line and instrument level devices, so plug in whatever you have. Unlike effects loops on mass-produced amplifiers, both the SEND and RETURN jacks on the SESSION are transformer isolated. This prevents ground loops between the amp and any unit plugged into the loop.

The effects loop can also be used as a switchable gain or level boost. A footswitch is included, and is plugged into the back of the amp using a regular guitar cord. This is great for performance situations where you may want two different volume levels, or even a switch between clean and dirty sounds within a song.

It's a smart loop, too!

You might imagine that if you had the loop in 'series' mode and then switched it 'off' that your sound would disappear. Not in our amps. The switching circuitry automatically enables the 'dry' path, bypassing the loop in this instance, but correctly switching back to just the 'returned' sound when the footswitch is activated again. See our Effects Loop Truths for more information about effects loops.

Get jiggy (or jazzed) with Bias

Low voltages in the power section assure peak performance and safe operation with any age or grade of tube. This is a classic tube power amplifier fitted with a few "power amp only" features. You can choose the fast attack of fixed-bias, used in 99% of guitar amps, or select the round sound of cathode bias with the 'K' switch. This is "true" cathode bias without a bypass cap, so the sound is round. Power in this mode is limited to 5-8W, so any tube you plug in will be safe and happy. You can alter the bias level in either mode with the 'H' switch; 'up' means "heat". The BODY control allows you to dial up any tone from low-powered single-ended to high-powered push-pull. Combined with the bias switch, you can also create a half-power asymmetrical distortion that is very smooth, for jazz.

But wait! The BODY control is no longer labelled with SE (single-ended) at one end and PP (push-pull) at the other, as it was in the past. It says 'BRN' and 'BLU'. Brown sound and blue sound? Not quite. This is our new double-ended BODY control with a single-ended sound at each end, and push-pull in the middle. This lets you take advantage of the amp's ability to can run dissimilar tubes, accessing the sound of either as single-ended. Output transformer primaries are colour-coded with a 'brown' end and a 'blue' end, which is very obvious when you look inside the amp. You will know which tube is the "brown" one and which one is "blue".

Match, Triode & Vibe - oh my

The massive Hammond output transformer allows the output tap MATCH switch to be set for whatever tone sounds best. Don't worry what the tap impedance ratings are - we won't tell you anyway! - just hook up your cabinets and play.

And then there is the TRIODE switch that minimizes odd-order harmonics, effectively rolling off "highs" in the triode position. Lots of players think they don't like triode sound, or ultralinear sound, but they have not usually heard either with the amp's feedback loop dialled out. You can do this on the SESSION using the VIBE control. With VIBE dialled all the way up, and TRIODE selected, the amp has the same damping factor as with VIBE fully counter-clockwise and pentode operation selected (TRIODE switch 'down').

Fun with tubes

A pair of 6L6s will give you classic North American sounds, while EL34s provide a more British sound. 6550Cs impart a cleaner sound, where 6V6s are creamier. You can even use two different tubes for completely new sounds. The bias tool and meter are included with the amp, and the bias procedure is in the owner's manual. You get three sets of output tubes with the SESSION, so you can start experimenting right away. Now you can leave all your tweed and Tolex amps at home, and just use the SESSION through a detuned cabinet to get any sound you want at any loudness.

Reverb reverb

The best finish for smooth overdrive tones is spacious reverb. The SESSION amp has a full-length Accutronics delay line driven by LONDON POWER's proprietary push-pull reverb driver. Amazing dimension and air! Our reverb is very clean so it won't muddy up your distortion or your clean tones.

and our usual Ironclad Durability

Power is served up by a Toroid Tech toroidal transformer with dual primaries for worldwide mains voltage compatibility. Full-bandwidth potted Hammond transformers are used in the effects loop for isolation. Solen polypropylenes and Philips and Wima capacitors are used throughout the supply and audio circuitry. Extensive choke filtering, DC heaters and DC-standoff heater operation keep hum to a minimum. A quiet DC fan keeps things cool. Military-style sealed pots from PEC and high-quality 1/4" jacks last virtually forever. All mounted in a 3U rack-mountable Hammond steel chassis with detachable rack ears.

The SESSION family of amps is covered by our Twenty Year Warranty, excluding tubes and the reverb tank.

Clean is its forté. But you get forty shades of purple to kiss the sky.

SUSTAINOR
2-channel guitar preamp

Sustainor preamp

The SUSTAINOR is an amazing tone machine!

It can produce sparkling clean guitar sounds or complex distortion textures with equal ease. It can sing like a vintage tweed classic or engulf you in full-bodied guitar magic. How can one amp be so versatile? It's simple. LONDON POWER has been helping musicians find their own Ultimate Tone for years, modifying and building all kinds of amplifiers for all kinds of playing styles.

With hundreds of effects pedals on the market, countless rack-mounted sound processors, separate preamps and power amps, integrated amps, combos, stacks and MIDI-controlled devices, the modern musician has an unbelievable range of musical tools from which to choose - and this can be daunting. In these times of three- and four-channel guitar preamps, one might wonder how a two-channel amp can survive. It's easy when the preamp actually has usable sounds and unmatched touch-responsiveness - and the SUSTAINOR does!

The seeming simplicity of the SUSTAINOR's control panel conceals its inner complexity. This two-channel preamp produces a diversity of dynamic and lively tones while delicately balancing clarity and warmth. The all-tube circuitry and pristine power supply will provide a lifetime of tone. If playing guitar is your life, the SUSTAINOR is an unparalleled "life support" system!

Details
Each preamp channel of the SUSTAINOR has a LEVEL control to set the relative loudness, and a three-way EQ section with HIGH, MID and LOW to tailor the tone precisely. Each channel also has several "voicing" switches, which can be used in any combination. These vary the gain structure of the related channel to produce diverse levels of warmth, crispness and body. The 'Lead' channel produces smooth high-gain sounds with its DRIVE control and selectable four- or five-gain-stage architecture. Thick distortion is its forte, but it also cleans up very nicely. The 'Clean' channel can produce any classic clean sound with its three-stage architecture and switchable voicings. The three-stage clean tone is magnificent, and is found in our SESSION amps, too.

Over-all stage volume is controlled by separate LOUD controls for each output. This allows you to set the left-to-right balance on larger stages or to set the volume of individual stage zones separately. Or, you can assign each output to work with only one of the preamp channels using the POWER LINK switch. This directs the clean sound through one output jack while the lead channel comes out the second output jack. If you have a 3D stereo tube reverb unit between the SUSTAINOR and your stereo power amp, then the reverb sound will appear in both channels, but the clean and lead sounds will be hard-left and hard-right. This produces a wide, spacious effect that can sound like two guitars playing counterpoint as you channel-change. Use it live or in the studio.

For the fullest sound, connect the stereo outputs of the SUSTAINOR through the 3-D stereo tube reverb unit, and that unit's outputs into the STEREO 50 power amp. For the ultimate Thunderous Smooth tones, use a SUPER NOVA cabinet on each side of the stage to be "inside" your sound!

Tracking each main output is a recording output that is partially compensated. Both outputs are tube buffered and are live simultaneously. You can take a line out to a mixing console or recorder while also driving your stage amp. Both the recording outputs and main outputs are transformer isolated to avoid ground loops. RF grounding is maintained.

Sustainor backJust as the outputs are splittable, so too are the inputs. IN-A can be used to drive both channels in a normal switching mode, but only drives the 'lead' channel when a second cable is jacked into IN-B. This allows you to front-load instrument-level effects specific to each channel, that are selected as each channel is selected. It also allows the independent use of each channel. For example, two guitars can each be processed and their sounds fed to separate amps, whether alternately for a single player, or simultaneously for two players. With only the inputs split, the sound of two instruments can be mixed into one amp, provided the 'clean' and 'lead' channel tones are compatible. The possibilities are endless ...

One of those possibilities takes advantage of the extra high input impedance of the 'clean' channel. You can plug an acoustic guitar into IN-B and get the most gorgeous, natural acoustic sound, unattainable from regular acoustic amps.

Internal channel selection is accomplished using silent jfet switches controlled by a simple footswitch. External devices can be switched using the SYNC jacks. Each can be synchronized to the 'clean' or 'lead' channels and can switch AC or DC up to 300 volts peak as a fully isolated contact from ground.

Sustainor InnardsThe clean power supply is built around a custom Hammond transformer. Dual primaries allow worldwide operation at the flick of a switch. Solen polypropylene caps support the plate supply, with extensive decoupling for each audio gain stage, and are used throughout the audio path, vastly improving treble and transient response. Full-bandwidth potted Hammond transformers are used for isolating all outputs. The amp will never need a "cap job" - EVER! Extensive choke filtering employed in the plate supplies combines with DC-offset heater operation to keep hum to a minimum. Pots are PEC sealed military types and all jacks are high-quality 1/4". The SUSTAINOR is equipped with six 12AX7s, but the user may substitute any 12A_7 tube for alternate gain levels or tones. Sturdy Teflon circuit cards (eyelet boards) support high-quality specially selected components in the heavy 18-gauge 2U steel Hammond chassis.

The SUSTAINOR carries our Twenty Year Warranty and should not require any servicing beyond preamp tube replacement every few years.

The perfect heart for a system with soul!

AMERICAN
vintage American sound with Power Scaling

Fender is the icon of North American guitar amp tone. Little amps like the Champ can grind when overdriven. The Deluxe sings. The Super has punch. The Pro and Twin are just huge! Why decide which to have, and why put up with the limitations of each when you gig? Now you can have all the Fender tone you desire in an amp with Power Scaling.

The London Power AMERICAN will create the sound of all of these classic amps and many more. No modelling. No trickery. Just pure all-tube circuitry, great design and super quality parts. This is a very intuitive amp to use with its familiar three-way EQ, Volume and Reverb controls. In this amp, Power Scaling is also intuitive to use. One dial from zero to 50W with no tone change from whisper to earthquake. You can also dial in any tube rectifier sound you like and imagine Fender models that never were, or go for those Dumble tones that grew from Leo's foundation and Howard's modifying genius.

What are London Power Iconic Amps?

ALBION
English tone with Power Scaling

Marshall amps are the icon of rock and metal tones. They are also the most frequently modded of all amp brands, usually because they are just too loud when they sound good. Master volumes are merely a partial solution and represent the "wrong" approach for players who want power tube distortion. This is the crux of the Plexi vs. 800 war. Why decide?

Get both the glory of non-master Plexi amps and the refined crunch of the original 800 amp in one unit. The London Power ALBION lets you switch between either amp configuration and between the sound of a 50W and 100W amp. You can also create Marshall amps that never were - single ended screamers, an 800 with a tube rectifier, and lots more. There is extra gain in here to capture the sounds that grew from modded-Marshalls, like the Soldano SLO, the Peavey 5150, Mesa's Rectifier amps, and many others.

There is no reverb and no effects loop - just ripping tone. Want to sound like Ritchie? Yngwie? Zakk? or Uli? Now you can with pure tube tone, and a Power Scaling control to make you just as loud or just as quiet as YOU want to be!
